VicRoads Locally Made & Ethically Accredited Uniforms – Bluegum

Published on 15/05/20

Exciting announcement, late last year ECA-accredited manufacturer Bluegum began the roll-out of uniforms and personal protective equipment (PPE) resulting from the first contract awarded under the Victorian Government’s new policy in support of locally made, ethically accredited businesses.

After an extensive competitive tender process, Bluegum was appointed as the exclusive supplier for VicRoads Registration and Licensing corporate uniforms and PPE to support local procurement for uniforms and PPE. Bluegum has been awarded the three-year contract to supply staff across over 40 Victorian offices and branches.

After months of working closely with team members within the department, the company rolled out the customer made uniforms proudly made in Victoria to staff late last year. This contract has already created jobs for Bluegum and additional work for their suppliers. An online portal has been developed (built and hosted in Ballarat) to present the range, log individual orders, manage uniform $ allowances and deliver the uniforms which have been manufactured in inner suburban Melbourne.

Bluegum has expanded their social procurement initiatives, including working with a not for profit disabilities enterprise in Nunawading – supporting employment for about 180 people to undertake folding, bagging, packing and dispatch services.

Our National Manager Angela Bell congratulated Bluegum on the contract win and delivery of the first round of uniforms.

“This is a great example of how governments can support local industries and retaining and growing local jobs by making policy changes.”

“And it’s great that part of that change included the creation of an ethical supplier register for Uniform and PPE suppliers to ensure that the businesses tendering for the work are valuing their workers, and guaranteeing their pay, entitlements and safe work conditions.”

Many people are not aware that we still have a local textile, clothing and footwear manufacturing industry but now we have locally made, ethically accredited uniforms going into the homes and workplaces of hundreds of Victorians, as a result of the government’s change. This is government policy in action. We are looking forward to see what else this policy delivers.”
